Ratio Gummies: The Benefits of Minor Cannabinoids In Your Gummies

The market size of cannabis edibles in the United States is significantly increasing, likely driven by a few key factors. These factors include the fact that edibles are a discreet, smoke-free way to use cannabis and are easier to precisely dose than other popular consumption methods, like vapes or flower. Within the edibles category, gummies are by far the most dominant edible product. In the United States alone, gummies make up almost 75% of all edibles sold.

If you’re new to cannabis gummies or are a seasoned user interested in enhancing your experience, you’ve come to the right place. In this blog, we’ll introduce you to minor cannabinoids and how finding gummies with specific minor cannabinoids can be beneficial.

What are Minor Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are a group of chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant that are directly responsible for its effects. These cannabinoids are divided into major cannabinoids, like THC, that are more abundant in a certain strain or product, and minor cannabinoids, which are only present in trace amounts. Though there are believed to be over 100 cannabinoids, many of them minor, these are the most common:

  • CBG- Known for its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, cannabigerol (CBG) is often referred to as the “mother of all cannabinoids.” Potential benefits include pain relief, improved focus, and an enhanced mood.
  • CBN- CBN, or cannabinol, is a natural sedative known for its calming effects. Potential benefits include an improved quality of sleep and a reduction in anxiety.
  • THCV- Often used to support weight management, THCV (tetrahydrocannabivarin) can have appetite-suppressant qualities. Other potential benefits include enhancing mental clarity and increasing energy.
  • CBC- Cannabichromene (CBC) works in synergy with other cannabinoids to enhance their individual therapeutic effects. For example, CBC, when used in conjunction with CBN, can enhance its sedative effects.

Though these cannabinoids (and cannabinoids in general) are less talked about than major cannabinoids like THC, they are potentially more beneficial, particularly in very specific applications. In the next section, we’ll discuss how the above minor cannabinoids have been studied for specific health benefits.

Specific Use Cases for Minor Cannabinoids (Backed by Science!)

Research shows that minor cannabinoids may have specific therapeutic effects, and, while more research is needed to learn the exact effects of specific cannabinoids and their benefits, here’s what we’ve learned from medical studies and reviews so far.

Potential Benefits of CBG

In one small-scale study, the majority of users self-reported that they felt CBG was more effective at treating anxiety and depression than conventional medicines, and almost 74% reported that it worked better for chronic pain than conventional medicine. A separate review claimed that between 15-40% of people with IBD use cannabinoids to increase their appetite and reduce their pain, though researchers have noted that high-quality evidence is lacking. Researchers have also noted that CBG has antibacterial properties and can stop breast cancer cells from multiplying while also killing inflammatory cells.

Potential Benefits of CBN

Unfortunately, CBN has not been studied or used as widely as CBD or THC, so there’s very limited knowledge or research on its uses and benefits. In one animal-based study, CBN was linked to muscle and joint pain relief in patients with fibromyalgia, and scientists noted that this pain relief was enhanced when CBD and CBN were used together. An older 2005 study on rats found that CBN was able to delay the onset of ALS, though it’s unclear at this time if it has the same effect on humans. The National Cancer Institute lists CBN as having potential immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory effects.

Potential Benefits of THCV

While cannabis is often associated with the munchies, delta 9 tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) might have the opposite effect. As such, it’s often referred to as “diet weed.” In a 2009 animal study, THCV reduced food intake and weight gain, and a 2013 animal study showed that it might reduce glucose intolerance related to obesity. Research on THCV’s effects have been extremely limited and only one trial has been performed on humans. The 2015 trial explored its potential to mitigate some negative effects of THC, and the author suggested that 10mg of THCV could reduce unwanted THC side effects, like an increased heart rate and verbal recall issues.

Potential Benefits of CBC

Cannabichromene (CBC) is one of the many cannabinoids found in cannabis, and though it has singular benefits, researchers think it works best when used in conjunction with other cannabinoids, like THC or delta-8. A 2006 study looked at cannabinoids other than THC and their effects on cancer and, so far, research shows that CBC is the second most potent cannabinoid at inhibiting cancer growth. It has also shown promise as a treatment for pain and inflammation, neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s, acne, and depression. Again, like the other cannabinoids on this list, research is extremely limited and often focused on animals.

Potential Side Effects & Things to Consider

As with any medication or herbal supplement, we encourage all readers to practice safety and take precautions when consuming minor cannabinoids. Cannabinoids, both major and minor, can have several side effects, including drowsiness, sleepiness, and nausea or vomiting. These side effects can vary depending on dosage, the type of cannabinoid being used, and your individual makeup, including metabolism. If you’re currently on medication, have been diagnosed with a health condition, are pregnant, or have never used cannabis before, we cannot reiterate the importance of consulting a healthcare professional enough.
